The Flintstones: Bedrock, an entertaining city-building game that immerses one into the lively world of Bedrock, the beloved home of the modern stone-age family, the Flintstones.
The Flintstones Leap From Television to Mobile Screens
The Flintstones: Bedrock ushers the classic cartoon family into the forefront of mobile gaming. Although they may have been absent from television for a while, their presence in our mobile devices is strong. Similar to other hit city-building games inspired by popular cartoon shows, the mobile adventure begins with a massive meteor striking the town. This sets the stage for the central narrative where the player's task is to return the town to its prehistoric splendor.
Restoring Bedrock
Starting from Fred and Wilma's iconic residence, players get to rebuild and redecorate structures while unlocking new characters, houses, and buildings that extend the gameplay. Alongside the main characters, various gizmosaurs, comical prehistoric creatures replacing modern day devices, make their appearance, serving as both charming callbacks to the original series and enjoyable additions to the roster. Each of these characters adds a flavor of humor to an otherwise straightforward game.
Stone Age Economics
The Flintstones: Bedrock introduces three different currencies to facilitate the city-building process: gold, clams, and stones. Besides regular earning methods, completion of missions or employment of characters and gizmosaurs grants players with these currencies. Real-money purchases offer an alternative for speeding up progression. While the gameplay is fun, it, unfortunately, tends to lose its appeal as the waiting times increase for task completion.
Faithful Visuals
Visually, The Flintstones: Bedrock is a treat for fans of the original series. It reproduces the authentic artwork and true-to-life character depictions that nostalgic players will appreciate. Even the iconic theme song graces the game to enhance the immersive Flintstones experience. Player's involvement with the characters and in-game cut scenes amplify the feel of the old days. Unfortunately, the overall game experience may be marred by periodic freezes, crashes, or slow download and installation times.
Conclusion
Despite being another addition to the city-building genre, The Flintstone: Bedrock manages to bring a piece of nostalgia to die-hard fans of the original series. However, it would be better if the creators had utilized the Flintstones license for a more innovative game concept.
